Mohs Surgical Assistant

Description:Assists the Mohs surgeon by providing and controlling surgical instruments and equipment during Mohs stages. Ensures that instruments and supplies are cleaned, sterilized and available as needed. Provides hands on assisting with Mohs procedures and wound closures/repairs. Assists with lab/pathology processing of Mohs specimens. In addition, the surgical technologist will assist the dermatologist providers in day to day dermatology patient flow.

I. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Procedures:
� Opens sterile supplies and sets up for each procedure.
� Assists Mohs surgeon during procedure according to prescribed standards. Assists and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
� Sets up procedure room, according to prescribed standards.
� Assists Mohs surgeon throughout the procedure with instruments, and providing hands on assistance, according to prescribed standards.
� Dress and provide wound care instruction for the surgery site.
� Takes appropriate photographs of Mohs stages. Label and organize photographs.
� Handles specimens for pathology according to prescribed standards.
Sterilization and aseptic technique:
� Demonstrated expertise in safety principles, asepsis, sterile technique and universal precautions.
� Knowledge of and ability to disinfect, clean and sterile surgical instruments, equipment and supplies.
� Knowledge of or experience in equipment, such as ultrasonic cleaner and autoclaves. Understand of the processes to maintain the autoclave.
� Assist in procedure room maintenance, including case preparation, room turnover, and instrument processing.
Other responsibilities:
� Compiles and prepares surgical packs. Runs autoclave as needed.
� Assist with inventory and storage of equipment and supplies.
� Assists with emergencies as needed.
� Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to all ages.
� Performs medical assistant duties as required for non-Mohs patients, as part of the dermatology practice. i.e giving injections

Duties:Days and hours can vary somewhat, but are generally Monday thru Thursday.
Qualifications:II. EDUCATION AND SKILLS
� Current CPR certified.
� Working knowledge of aseptic techniques and sterilization practices.
� Two years experience in an outpatient surgery center, Mohs dermatology practice, or office-based surgery department preferred.
� Must be able to be certified by WA State to give injections, surgical techs do not qualify.
� Medical Assistants and LPNs with the above experience do qualify.
